In the food sector, safety is not a “nice-to-have” — it is the foundation of the trust between brands and consumers. The latest EFSA Eurobarometer 103.3 report (2025) delivers a clear message: concerns about chemical contaminants are reshaping purchasing priorities across Europe.

At AGROLAB, we have analyzed the data to help our partners respond effectively to these challenges:

Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern: 36% of European consumers cite residues of antibiotics, hormones, or steroids in meat among their top food-related concerns. This issue has increased significantly, becoming the number one concern in six EU countries. Moreover, 52% of respondents believe that the misuse of antibiotics in livestock has a strong impact on human health.

Awareness and unprompted concerns: Awareness is widespread: 64% of Europeans have heard about the risks associated with antibiotic residues in meat. Even more relevant for industry professionals is the data on “unprompted” concerns: when consumers are asked to identify food-related risks without being given a list, chemical contaminants (including antibiotics) are the most frequently mentioned issue (28%), ranking above general health risks.

What does this mean for your business?

In a market where price remains the leading purchase driver (60%), certified quality is the key factor protecting premium positioning. Communicating that a product is “tested and free from antibiotic residues” is no longer just about compliance — it directly addresses a safety need expressed by millions of consumers.
