The European Commission has published the Annual Report for 2019 on the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).

 

The most important results of this report correspond with our subjective impressions from the monthly evaluation for AGROLAB RADAR. The top three notifications for the combination of hazard/product/country in 2019 were:

 

  1. Salmonella in poultry meat and products thereof from Poland
  2. Salmonella in nuts, nut products and seeds from Sudan
  3. Aflatoxins in nuts, nut products and seeds from the United states

 

In addition, pathogenic microorganisms were the most frequent reported hazard, with salmonella, listeria monocytogenes and shigatoxin-producing E.coli as the most frequent pathogens (descending order).

 

Aflatoxins were the most frequent reported mycotoxins, especially in nuts, nut products and seed, fruits and vegetable, herbs and spices (descending order). The second most reported mycotoxin was Ochratoxin A, mostly found in fruits and vegetables, especially in raisins and dried figs.

 

Considering this, it is not surprising, that nuts, nut products and seeds were the most frequent reported product category in food. The second most frequent reported product category in 2019 was fruits and vegetables, followed by dietetic food, food supplements and fortified food.
