The SEATRACES project was organizing the 2nd International Symposium on Labelling and Authenticity of Seafood – ISLAS 2021 hosted by the Institute of Marine Research of the Spanish National Research Council (IIM-CSIC).

Fish and seafood are among the top five of food fraud cases in the world. The symposium served as an expert platform for the exchange of knowledge and research results. Among the fraudulent practices most common is the mislabelling of seafood aiming to achieve higher profit, e.g. Alaskan plaice or even pangasius labelled as sole fish or a mix up of black and white halibut. Also adding water to frozen scallops to increase weight seems still a common fraudulent attempt.

YOUR PLUS: AGROLAB LUFA has established specific real-time PCR systems for the safe and robust determination of numerous fish species that can also be successfully applied to processed fish. We also offer DNA sequencing with international data base evaluation. Our molecular biology team has an excellent international network, which is an advantage when dealing with tricky questions.
